I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from worsening, give our emergency plumber a ring, any time of the day or night. We’ll be there promptly to solve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and mop up any water or position a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
