I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While you wait, start cleaning up any water, place a container to catch drips, and clear away valuable things from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
