I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
