I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff tap to cut off all water to your property.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, put a container to catch any drips, and clear away valuable things from the area. If the property water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
